Real World vs. Textbook 📘 On location during a film shoot about to go live, and there is a man coming down the sidewalk toward the shot: Production Assistant: In a very animated posture, waving and gesturing get pot of the way. Come on man MOVE. Man: looks at him, points inward at his chest, as if you say you talking to me? Production Assistant: “Come on man.” Man: Continues to walk passes by. Director: Calls ACTION we start shooting the scene. Production Assistant comes and stands by me and says, “did you see that guy.” Me: Yes, you were pretty animated. Production Assistant: I didn’t want the guy walking through the shot. Me: We were about to shoot a 10 minute segment. Do you think you could have held him in place for 10 minutes? Production Assistant: I don’t know. Me: Did you know the guy? Do you know the neighborhood? Production Assistant: No Me: The man walking down the sidewalk was a 20 second inconvenience at best. You turn this into a confrontation that it is a 15 - 20 minute situation and delay. That happens 3 times and we are an hour behind schedule. Try and relax and stay focused on the objective not the minor inconvenience. In the future the best way to eliminate this situation is to pay a large amount of money to the city and get a production permit. They will assign police officers and post Street and sidewalk closure signs. If you don’t want to incur that expense then accept the minor inconvenience. 😉
